What exactly is big data analytics

You have heard about data analytics, big data and data science. So what exactly is big data analytics ? Well don’t be confused about the nomenclature. Everything is interrelated and they solve each ones problems. You need data analytics to provide a meaning to the data extracted from hadoop/spark.

Big data analytics applications enable data scientists, predictive modelers, statisticians and other analytics professionals to analyze growing volumes of structured transaction data. Also  other forms of data that are often left untapped by conventional business intelligence (BI) and analytics programs. That encompasses a mix of semi-structured and unstructured data. For example, internet clickstream data, web server logs, social media content, text from customer emails and survey responses.

Switch technology from mainframe

August 1, 2017 by admin

Career growth in mainframe technology

Mainframe was a great technology in the past. They still handle huge amount of data and we all have heard about the amazing security..Because they cost a lot, not adaptable to change and there are no major developments going on in this area Also it doesn’t fit into the modern day tech stack and requirements. Frankly speaking to have some adventure, the max you can do is to write a rexx tool. You can always switch technology to big data technologies like hadoop, spark and data anlytics.

In the current scenario in IT industry you shouldn’t stick with mainframe if you really want a long term career which pays well. You have to constantly add values to your career and get out of your comfort zone to sustain in the industry.

switch from mainframe

Problems with career in Mainframe

The number of openings for senior mainframe developers(5-9 yrs in Indian context) have shrunk significantly. This may be attributed that whatever the jobs that are outsourced to India requiring mainframe skills can be done with folks having less experience. After 4-5 years of experience you will mostly get contractual openings, although paid as per industry, you can not risk your permanent employee position and this fear factor will drag your salary drastically.

  • Salaries are not competitive.
  • More contractual jobs.
  • Less career options.
  • You can be easily replaced.
  • Outdated technology. No major development anymore.

Lies about switching from mainframe

Lie 1. You should switch to hadoop. Hadoop+Mainframe is a great combination

Hadoop certainly pays better with more opportunities than mainfame. But most people from service companies blindly jump to hadoop from mainframe only because few other people did that and some of them got the job. Just because both mainframe and hadoop or any such big data technology handle huge amount of data doesn’t mean you will be comfortable working with that too.Know your pros and cons, the technologies your are comfortable with and if you can sustain the change in the new company if at all you are able to switch.

  • Don’t jump to the same ship everyone is jumping.
  • Mainframe and Hadoop are not at all related, technically.
  • There are not much actual hadoop work in companies.
  • You should be aware of which technology you are comfortable with.
  • You should know that if at all you are successful in switching, can you sustain in projects in the new company.

Lie 2. You should mention both mainframe and big data experience in  your resume

Companies pay you either for mainframe or for hadoop/spark/analytics. Because you will be working in one of them. They can’t be stacked together.Don’t be a wasted hybrid. The reason you are not getting much interview calls is may be due to this.

If you have less than 5 years of experience , then you can completely mention java + hadoop in your resume. For more than 5 years of experience, they can mention mainframe for initial few years.

We have helped hundreds of mainframe developers to change their technology successfully. We can guide you for a better career path.Get in touch if you are confused about something.

Career options for mainframe professionals

It depends how many years of experience you have, what technologies you have worked in and where you are located. You should choose a technology where you can perform well after switching, something you can easily pick up.

Lets look at the most popular programming languages in stackoverflow survey 2017.

changing career to a new technology

As you can see,Javascript tops the list followed by SQL,Java,C# and Python. In case you want to choose anything from the list,I will advise Javascript,Java or Python. They all are high-paying and have huge opportunities in market. But apart from the technologies, you also have to learn frameworks related to it.In any modern day web application, you have to work with frameworks and ORM tools using the respective specific programming language.

If you are still confused about which technology you should choose and how you can modify your resume based on that, reach out to us.We have helped hundreds of professionals like you.All for free.
